Investing in the Rich Minds of Our Community


Freedom First Credit Union awards nearly $10,000 each year in academic scholarships. Are you in college or in your final year of high school? You may be eligible.

2019 scholarship applications are now available. Please submit your completed application no later than 3:00pm on Friday, April 5th, 2019 via mail, e-mail, or fax.

Charles Perkins Scholarships

Three $1,000 scholarships are named in honor of Charles Perkins, who served as general manager and president of Freedom First Credit Union.

2018 Winners: Morgan Lee Fisher, Julie Ann McKnew, and Ryea Young


City of Salem/Frank Turk Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship is named in recognition of the City of Salem Employees Credit Union. Frank Turk served as its president from 1978-2004. Freedom First is grateful for the many years that Frank Turk served on its Board of Directors.

2018 Winner: Elissa Look


Fritz Kehn Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Fred C. "Fritz" Kehn, who was one of the original charter members of the Credit Union. A former General Electric sheet metal foreman in Salem, Fritz served as the first Credit Union president in 1956.

Torie Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Freedom First Credit Union sponsors the Torie Phillips Memorial Scholarships, which honors the memory and life of Lord Botetourt High School student Torie Phillips through scholarships to LBHS graduates who demonstrate exemplary character and academic achievement.

2018 Winner: Clara Keeley


Virginia Tech General Scholarship Fund

Freedom First contributes each year to the Virginia Tech General Scholarship Fund.
