Investing in Roanoke’s Future: Freedom First Powers a Downtown Transformation

One of Downtown Roanoke’s most iconic buildings, the former First National Exchange Bank, is getting a second life. Local developer Lucas Thornton, restaurateur JP Powell, and music industry leader John McBroom saw the historic building as more than a structure. They saw a vision for a space that intersected music, food, and hospitality.

Soon, it will house a vibrant music hall, Spanish-inspired restaurant, and boutique hotel. You can follow the project's progress here every week as we document every step of the way!

Why the First National Exchange Bank Building?

Developer Lucas Thornton's vision for this project was to breathe new life into this historic structure while preserving its character - which requires creative financing. That's where Freedom First's Commercial Lending team was able to step in.

A Music Venue Like No Other

The Exchange Music Hall aims to boost Roanoke into a true music destination. The first concert, set for New Year’s Eve 2025 with headliner Grace Potter, hopes to mark the start of a new era in Roanoke’s music scene.
